Hubcap Sizing Information

Front Hubcaps

Generally, all trucks with oil front hubs use the same size front hubcap. However, if your truck's front hubs must be greased rather than oiled, you will not be able to use a regular front hubcap. You will have to use a front axle cover instead. However, some truck owners with oil front hubs choose to use front axle covers rather than hubcaps to achieve a certain type of "look" for their axles.

Notches - Most trucks with oil front hubs are able to use a front hubcap with 6 uneven notches. On this type of cap, 4 of the notches are the same size, and the other 2 are smaller. This will accommodate hubs with 4 or 5 even-sized notches, or 6 uneven notches. However, it will not fit on a hub with 6 even notches. Hubs with 6 even-sized notches will require a hubcap with 6 even notches.

Also, the notches come in two lengths - 7/16" and 1". Generally, the 7/16" will be enough to hold the cap on the axle. However, some trucks have deeper notches and will require the use of a hubcap with a 1" lip for a better fit.

Front Axle Covers

Front axle covers generally consist of three pieces - the center cap, the beauty ring, and the lug nut covers. The center cap and beauty ring usually snap together, but they may be molded together as one piece in some sets. In either case, the lug nut covers screw-on or push-on to hold these pieces onto the axle.

If your truck has grease-pack front hubs, you will have to use a front axle cover rather than a hub cap. Hub caps attach to the axle with clips that snap into notches in the axle housing itself. Grease-pack front hubs do not have these notches. The inner wall of a grease-pack front hub is completely smooth.

If your truck has oil front hubs, you are still able to use a front axle cover.

The other consideration when choosing a front axle cover is lug nut cover size. We carry axle covers for two different sizes of lug nut cover - 1.5" and 33mm.

Rear Hubcaps

Most Peterbilt, Freightliner, and Kenworth trucks will use an 8" diameter hubcap. International and Volvo trucks will require a larger 8-1/4" diameter hubcap.

It is recommended to double-check these measurements based on the size of the rear axle housing studs. The stud for an 8" cap will measure 5/8" and the stud for an 8-1/4" cap will measure 3/4".

If you experience difficulty installing your hubcaps, the most common issue is axle housing nuts. If these nuts are turned with too many of their points facing out, then the hubcap will seem too small. If the nuts are turned with too many of their flat sides facing out, then the hubcap will be loose and seem too big. Either way, this problem can be solved by turning the axle housing nuts so that a more even number of points and flat sides are facing out.

Rear Axle Covers

Rear axle covers are simply a different look than a hubcap-lugnut cover combination.
